As ballplayers, much of our progress and development will occur underneath the surface. It's the routines and commitment to an approach that will get us through the failures, and setbacks that are guaranteed in this game.

With that said, here are three ways to Deal with failure & setbacks in baseball.

Use Amor Fati

Amor Fati is a Latin phrase that can be translated as "love of fate" or "love of one's fate". Its used to describe an attitude in which one sees everything that happens in one's life, including suffering and loss, as good or, at the very least, necessary.

Get injured? Is your coach sleeping on ya? You sitting the bench? You 0-12 & can't buy a hit? Made an error & the winning run scored?

Amor Fati.

Return To The Approach & Routine

The more we play, the more success we have on the field, the less we tend to rely on what got us there in the first place.

Our approach & consistent routine.

Heading towards overconfidence, we drift further and further from the fundamentals.

When we're on a hitting-streak, and feeling invisible, that is the moment we must tap the breaks and return to the approach, routine, and fundamentals rooted in peak performance.

whether your 0-4 or 4-4, the routine and approach will always be there to place you back on the path towards peak performance.

One Thing At a Time

Each game, practice, and training session presents a chance to overthink things.

How does my swing feel? Am I good enough? What does my coach think of me? Who’s in the stands? Am I gonna be benched? Should I change my stance?

Today, just focus on one thing.

You don't need to get lost in a thousand other distractions.

When it's time to swing, swing.

When it's time to throw, throw.

When it's time to catch, catch.

And when it's time to compete, compete.

The great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius said “approach each task as if it were your last because it very well could be”.

No one gets to play this game forever.

Make the most of it by finding clarity in the simplicity of playing the game of baseball.

One pitch at a time.
